The Community Spirit

From Our honorable PM:

My trips back to my hometown and constituency of Pekan always evoke a sense of nostalgia. I am pleased to be able to visit Pekan several times this month, considering the amount of workload in Putrajaya. Since these visits become more frequent every Ramadhan, so do the memories.

One childhood memory that I recall takes place during the fruit season. During such times we would receive visitors from all areas of Pekan who brought with them some of the produce from their own orchard as gifts. The family home would always be stocked with all types of local fruit – durian, rambutan, langsat, you name it.

In appreciation of these thoughtful gestures, my late father would make the effort to personally thank the village folk who had come by. He would personally travel to the homes of his constituents and thank them for their gifts.

I’m certain many of the people of Pekan still remember his visits. While this memory is special and unique to my family and the people of my hometown, the gesture and intent behind it is familiar to all of us. It is a simple, yet meaningful reciprocal relationship that fosters respect among individuals. The spirit of neighbourliness in Malaysia has always been a part of our national culture, regardless whether it is during Ramadhan or other festive occasions. Communal activities like gotong-royong, kenduri (or open houses) and balik kampung are a reminder of this relationship.

The culture of balik kampung is important in preserving the connection between those of us who live in more urban and developed areas of the country and the traditional, cultural and rural way of life. I observed that the recent long weekend was just one example of many in our rich Malaysian culture where most of us return to our hometowns to reconnect with relatives and friends.

While we make our contribution to the development of the nation, the continuation of such traditions and relationships is crucial for us to preserve our culture and identity as Malaysians. How do you plan to connect with your neighbours and community this coming festive season? Share your experiences in the comments below.

Good Try And Good Lesson

The acting gave us a huge encouragement and provided us a good opportunity to show ourselves with the self-ability to accomplish this entertained task. During the acting session, we felt super surprised and excited since we all knew that this try to us to do the demonstration based on the relevant titles.

Perhaps, we were not the perfect group still existed many drawbacks when we were taking the acting. Nonetheless, we had already given ourselves a good try and excellent enjoyment on this acting. All of us gave ideal cooperation and spirit until we could manage and succeed the acting task perfectly.

From the recommendation from Lecturer, we all were surprised since he gave comments that even we had some weaknesses, nevertheless, we were the group that could demonstrate oursleves naturally and had a high spirit and cooperation. What we learnt from 3days of acting?

Having three classes session to complete all the comic acting by all the groups from E31 sessions, we definitely gain a lot. Maybe this activities seems to be out from the topic of studying Ethnic relations for certain people, though it actually benefits all of us.

Firstly, we learn all the history of the past that has been the key and also the story of success in our country. This histories involves the interaction between all ethnics for example in the history of formation of Malaysia, riots during 13 may 1969 and so on. This history is the best source of keeping us to be ready and to create a peace environment in order to preserve all the success that we have gained in the past as well as to improve ourselves from the lessons learnt from the past.

Next, we get to prepare ourselves in presenting ourselves in public. Since acting requires courage as well as concentration, it helps us to build up our confident when facing others in public. Not to forget, we could express ourselves in the class. Rather than having a normal class session , we get to involve ourselves in contributing the ideas and knowledge to everyone in the class. The lesson becomes more interesting and lively with this kind of activities.

Overall, our group has benefits a lot from here. We get the fun and excitment in attending classes that we normally dont get it and we also learn many things which we always wish to by an alternative way besides reading from books and slide presentation. Thanks to all my group members for having a good time with me in acting out the comics drawn and also thanks to all my coursemate for giving us a wonderful time together. Not to forget to Mr. Ahmad who has come up with such briliant activities. May the joy and excitment continues for times to come.

Comic Drawing

Communist Intermission

The first drawing of our comic is based on the situation during the communist intermission in year 1930.It is drawb by Lee How Cheh. This comic briefly desribes the events that took place during that period of time.

Japanese Occupation

This comic drawn by Ching Wai Hoong is based on the time when Japan invaded
Tanah Melayu and How Japanese had treated the citizen here. Cruelty, unfairness, and wildness are best to describe during that time.

Malayan Union

The third drawing is drawn by Lam Kheng Yik. This is about the flow of events that had took place during Malayan Union. From the British arrival till the abolish of Malayan Union is clearly described and shown from our comic.

At the end of this session, we took a picture with our lovely lecturer Encik Ahmad as for rememberance. May the joy and fun during this class will be remembered forever and more inteesting activities will turn up in the coming classes.

Dialogue

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Today our Ethnic Relations subject lecturer had done revision of last class lecture. He used 15minutes to ask us some questions and meanings that we done in puzzle. Sir asked two special words that’s the different between enculturation and acculturation.

As I know, meaning of enculturation is the adoption of the behavior patterns of the surrounding culture. However, acculturation means the modification of the culture of a group or individual as a result of contact with a different culture. Addition for the meaning is that the process by which the culture of a particular society is instilled in a human from infancy onward. Besides that, Sir also asked us other meanings such as pluralism, discrimination, prejudice and so on.

After revision session, Sir was given us two pieces of papers for every group as our today class activity. The activity is creates dialogue for the comics. Furthermore, we can draw another character to make it more interesting. To make it nicer, we are able to color every character in the comics. This is a group work and I am worked with my group members. They are Lee How Cheh, Wong Chun Yuan, Heng Poh Chai, Ching Wai Hoong and me. For beginning, we all are headache with it because we have no idea about it. In half an hour period, we are able to created dialogue for every comic. The roughly idea was came from a word, Racism. We will try to make the dialogue interesting so readers won’t get bored of it.
